Back in Nashville

I went back to Nashville last week and worked in our office as well as met with colleagues and members of the Administration and others.

While there, I talked with colleagues and others about the new Ethics Committee. I will be one of six senators (three Democrats and three Republicans) serving with a like number from the House.

Over the next several weeks, we will hear what other states are doing and possibilities for what we might do in Tennessee.

I'd welcome the counsel of my constituents and my fellow Tennesseans on what you think we should do about ethics issues involving legislators, lobbyists and campaign contributions.

When we elect you people to go to Nashville it is with only one purpose - to serve "we the people" not to feather your own nest. We do not want your wives and kin to draw fantastic salaries to lobby you! If you can' live on the salary and perks then don't run.

How could you have a citizen legislature when citizens cannot run because they cannot afford the low pay? Most of those sucessful in politics are also sucessful in other arensa where they are compensated duly for thier work. I don't believe the legislature has had a raise since the 80s. Could you work for nearly 2 decades without a raise?

I could do without a raise forever if I got the graft most of these crooks get. $5,000 here $10,000 there - dinners here dinners there, etc.

I think the first thing the "ethics" committee should do is disclose their entire personal finances and tax forms for the last 10 years to determine if they are ethical. They should be vetted somehow don't you think? Otherwise why should anyone have any confidence in this committee?
